Children's Book Review - Billy and Monster's Golden Christmas by David Chuka

About the Book:
They're back!

Discover what new adventures Billy and Monster get up to in the latest episode in this exciting series.

It's almost Christmas and Billy's looking forward to his present from Uncle Leland from England. On Christmas day, Billy isn't too excited when Uncle Leland gives him a golden pen but gives Cousin Bob a big monster truck. How could Uncle Leland do this to him? Billy's not a happy bunny and his ingratitude makes Uncle Leland sad

and his Dad mad.

A game of hide and seeks plunges Billy into a world filled with snow, happy monsters and houses made of chocolate.

You will love reading this story to your loved ones as they get to learn the most important thing about this special holiday season. Expect funny illustrations, laugh out loud moments and touching moments in this funny book for kids.

My Review:
Billy and Monster's Golden Christmas is hilariously entertaining and colorful! Kids will be entertained through the imagination of Billy leaving his world and going to his farting friend Monsters world. In the end, Billy discovers a very valuable lesson the true meaning of Christmas! This is the second book I've had the pleasure to read authored by David Chuka and it won't be my last! The first two books are just plain silly. Mr. Chuka has quite the imagination, which kids will love. But he also has a talent for teaching important lessons such as what Christmas is really about! I highly recommend this book if your looking for a fun holiday read with a wonderful Christmas ending!

Make sure to watch the video trailers for his most popular books on this Amazon Page and you’ll get a little taste of why his books have garnered more than 300 glowing reviews.
He has so many stories to tell and can’t wait to share them with you and your loved ones.

$25 Book Blast Giveaway The Magic of Friendship

The Magic of Friendship by Subhash Kommuru

About the Book

Title: The Magic of Friendship | Authors: Subhash Kommuru & Sujata Kommuru | Publication Date: August 25, 2014 | Publisher: Kommuru Books | Pages: 42 | Recommended Ages: 3 to 8 Book Description: A flock of migrating geese stumble upon Tadoba, the land of the fierce tiger Babbar who does not tolerate anyone in his area. Will Babbar show any mercy? Can he change? Will the geese make it to safety? This is a story about change -- a transformation that comes with the magic of friendship. Personality may not change, but nature can surely change. This story will shows the value of friendship and how that can change a person, particularly one who is lonely and never really had the gift of laughter.

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Goodreads

The Buzz About the Book

"Committed to introducing Indian culture into children’s literature, Kommuru has set The Magic of Friendship in the heart India amid an imagined Tadoba Forest, which is not that farfetched from the real Tadoba National Park and Tiger Reserve near Maharashtra, India. Including other aspects of the country, such as the banyan tree — its national tree, and Kojagiri, an Indian term loosely related to a celebration, Kommuru’s story opens opportunities for children to learn and ask questions about another part of the world. Closing with a great moral that children will easily be able to figure out, The Magic of Friendship, is not just a fascinating read. Wonderfully written with aptly complementing illustrations, it is also a welcomed addition to children’s literature." ~ Pacific Book Review

"I really enjoyed this story. I thought it expressed how friendship changes people and makes their lives better very well. The art is cute and explanatory without the story as well."~ Phaedra S., Amazon

"When it comes to stories about friendship, children's picture book literature is replete with tales of boys and girls who form mutually beneficial relationships; but The Magic of Friendship aims for something more and stands above most others in pairing vivid, colorful animal drawings with a narrative that at first seems predictable, but offers some satisfying differences...the real value of friendship and its world-changing potentials in this winning, feel-good story perfect for read-aloud or young picture book readers." ~ D. Donovan, eBook Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

"This is a really cute book that teaches that things are not always what they seem. The book is well illustrated and one that kids can easily relate to. This book is appropriate all the way up to 3rd grade reading level. My first grader was able to read it easily!" ~ Bonnie R., Amazon

"A story that will certainly put a smile on your face while teaching the importance of friendship." ~ Brenda C., Amazon

About the Authors: Subhash & Sujata Kommuru

Subhash and Sujata KommuruSubhash and Sujata Kommuru hail from India. They migrated to the United States along with their memories of childhood and youth. Now that they are parents, just like every immigrant they crave to introduce their child to the culture and values of their upbringing. Yet it is challenging to teach something while you are in the midst of adjusting to a different culture yourself. Subhash and Sujata both work in different disciplines and have different styles and backgrounds, but it is the upbringing of their son that brings them on the same page. That exact place where they meet is captured and reflected in their stories, where Subhash can express in words, and Sujata can illustrate them beautifully. Where he puts it in black and white, she adds color to it. You get the idea! These stories are their attempt to share a glimpse of their childhood days with their son. He is their inspiration to write short stories that have meaning to them and provide teaching in some shape or form.

Gerbs in the House $50 Book Giveaway

About Book:
Mocha (daddy) says it’s bedtime, but Petri (son) wants nothing to do with it!  Reading books, singing lullabies and juggling plates are only a few of the things Mocha does in an attempt to tire his son out. Although Petri is entertained, he still refuses to sleep. He just wants to dilly dally! Worn out by his son’s shenanigans and silly antics, will Mocha ever get Petri to bed before losing his marbles?

My Review:
**I was provided a PDF copy of this children's book for my honest review. My review is not from a writer's critique, but from a kid-friendly review.

This children's picture book is truly a creative rhyming piece! The colorfully illustrated front cover drew me in, and the illustrated pages combined with photos of two real live gerbils makes this children's picture book very entertaining and quite hilarious. It reminded me of when I was a child and dressed my cats up.

My three year old enjoyed the pictures. My ten year old daughter enjoyed the rhyming story. It was a little longer (44 pages) compared to other children's picture books (32 pages) they've read. But the photos and illustrations were entertaining enough to keep their attention!

If your kids are gerbil lovers, they'll definitely be inspired and entertained by this children's book.

Children's Book Review of Mini-Myths by Joan Holub

Age Range: 1 - 3 years
  • Author: Joan Holub
  • Series: Mini Myths
  • Board book: 24 pages
  • Publisher: Harry N. Abrams; Brdbk edition (September 16, 2014)

About Be Patient, PANDORA!
When Pandora is warned by her mother not to open a box, her spirited curiosity trumps her obedience. Pandora harmlessly touches the box, innocently leans on the box, and eventually, albeit accidentally, bursts the box open! The cupcakes that were hidden inside are ruined, except for one last vestige, which Pandora presents in the hope that her mother still loves her. Leslie Patricelli’s depictions of this physical comedy bring a lively narrative to Joan Holub’s carefully crafted text. Includes a summary of the original Pandora’s Box myth at the end.

Praise for Mini-Myths: Be Patient, Pandora!
"These adorable volumes feature the title characters learning important life lessons with slight allusions to their Greek mythology counterparts."
--School Library Journal

Purchase “Be Patient, Pandora!”:  Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository | iTunes

About Play Nice, HERCULES!
Hercules is not as interested in “playing nice” as he is in playing strong! But when one feat of strength destroys his little sister’s 12-piece tower, he must use his powers for good to restore the tower and seek her forgiveness. She forgives him indeed, and then shows her own strength by gleefully knocking down the stacked blocks herself! Joan Holub’s expertly focused text pairs perfectly with Leslie Patricelli’s famously humorous illustrations. Includes a summary of the original Hercules’s Twelve Labors myth at the end.

Praise for Mini-Myths: Play Nice, Hercules!

My Review of Mini-Myths:
Absolutely loved both of these books! The illustrations are fun and simple, as is the text. Perfect for a toddler or earlier preschooler.

As soon as the books arrived, I showed them to my two year old. We sat down to read them both. She giggled as we read Be Patient, Pandora! My two year old is very much like Pandora - curious, inquisitive, and impatient. But what toddler isn't? Pandora is tempted to find out what is in the wrapped up box. Her mom warns her not to touch it. But the wrapped gift is way too tempting for Pandora. This book teaches children to listen to their parents and the consequences of not listening. It also teaches kids that sometimes its better to wait because the surprise can be so much fun!

Play Nice, HERCULES was just as entertaining. Like every big brother, he torments his little sister by knocking down some blocks she built. She cries and he rebuilds her creation. But his lesson isn't finished there. I don't want to spoil the ending because it really captured a kid moment perfectly. This book teaches kids the importance of forgiveness, sharing, and playing nicely together.

We are now huge fans of the Mini-Myths children's picture books. Perfect for stocking stuffers for the holidays or just a little treat!

* I was given copies of both Mini-Myths books for my honest review.

Sing-Along Construction Song Book Review

I was given a copy of this children's book for my honest review, which I've shared below.

Author: Louise Lintvel

Illustrator: Julie Sneeden
Publication Date: August 11, 2014
Publisher: Independent
Page Count: 32
Recommended Age: 1 to 5 years old

Free audio download of the construction song available at www.louiselintvelt.com

My Book Review:
This children's book is colorfully illustrated and fun to read! And the audio song that accompanies it is such a wonderful compliment.

I read the book first, and then listened to the audio song that came with it. Right after, I shared it with my two year old daughter. It kept her fully entertained. In fact, within seconds of the audio song playing, she got up and started to dance (smiling from ear to ear). Once it was finished, I had her sit by my side, listening to me read the story to her and allowing her to look at the pictures on each page.  Both kept her attention.

The song reminds me of Thomas the Train. It's fun and simple, with a catchy beat. The illustrations were perfect for this age. They were colorful and kid-like.

There was one part of the book which I wasn't a huge fan of and that was the way the text was shown (mom view versus a kid view). On every page, the text was placed within a box that was supposed to look like it was underground. However, it actually made me think of ancient scroll paper, giving it an ancient time feel. That being said I don't feel it has any affect on any boy and girl construction enthusiasts enjoyment of the story and illustrations.

As such, I give this book a 5 Star!

About Author Louise Lintvelt

Louise Lintvelt
I am from South Africa and I live in a city called Pretoria. I am a Chemical Engineer by day and a children’s book writer by night. I am married to a wonderful man and we have a beautiful two year old daughter called Allegra. I love writing stories for my daughter, who is a constant inspiration.
I have always loved reading. My childhood was filled with books and you would often find me crouched the corner of my room devouring the pages of my favourite book. I lived for Tuesday mornings as this would bring with it the excitement of a trip to the local library for story hour and the opportunity to take home a new book. I was the local librarian’s worst nightmare. I would arrive a few minutes early to check that she had not mistakenly chosen a book that had already been read in story hour.

I was a very bossy three year old with an insatiable appetite for books! This has not really changed much in the last twenty seven years. Dr. Seuss was my absolute favourite and to say that my copy of One, Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish was well read would be an understatement.

When it comes to writing, my daughter is my biggest inspiration. I love seeing her face light up with excitement when we sit down to read a book before bedtime. My daughter was fascinated by giraffes after we went on a safari trip in late 2012. This planted the seed for my picture book called How Andrew Got His Spots which is a rhyming adaptation of a story I originally wrote in the third grade. My daughter has since grown into a healthy two year old with a passion for aircraft which was the inspiration for writing Goodnight, Sleep Tight, What a Wonderful Flight.

I am sure that there are many parents in the world (myself included), who are quite decidedly sick and tired of reading the same favourite picture book night after night. I believe that the words of Oscar Wilde best describe how children should feel about picture books when he said, If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all.
Happy Reading!

MY REVIEW

I personally read the first book in the Noah Zarc trilogy and found it an adventurous read! Time travel, robots, spaceships and more! I became a huge fan of the main character, an amazingly courageous twelve year old 'paraplegic' boy named Noah whose disability never stopped him from doing anything he set his mind too. And as a mom with a daughter living with a disability (type 1 diabetes) all you want is help them achieve their potential and go after their dreams. Even though my daughters disease isn't physical, like Noah's, it does affect her physical ability to be able to play sports and reach her intellectual and physical potential. Noah encourages all kids to perservere!

Now about the author. Amazing! The Zarc family relationship reminded me a lot of mine. There was trust, worry, responsibility and lots of sibling sarcasm. His ability to connect multiple time periods and his creative ability in making you feel like you actually are part of the story will make this a fun read for any kid. As such, I give it a....

BIG THUMBS UP!

The Buzz About the Noah Zarc Books

Book 1: "Pease's strength as a storyteller lies in his ability to connect multiple time periods imaginatively, as well as Noah's excited, fast-paced narration." ~ Publishers Weekly
Book 1: "If I had read this book at age 10, I think it would have made me love SF just as much as reading Asimov did. If you like the non-stop action and humor of Rick Riordan's Olympians books, I think you'll also like Noah Zarc." ~ Sher A. Hart, book blogger and author
Book 2: "This is another great mind-bender. The wild time jump details are fabulously thought out and cause some unexpected results." ~ Michelle Isenhoff, Children's Author
Book 2: "A well-written, adventurous read for young readers and even adults, Noah Zarc blasts through space and into your imagination." ~ TKristufek, Amazon Reviewer
Book 3: "I was completely captured by the characters, the action and the issues and questions: set in fantasy but integrating concepts and engaging readers with a fun tale that teaches as it entertains." ~ Gaele, Amazon Reviewer

About the Author: D. Robert Pease

D. Robert Pease

D. Robert Pease has been interested in creating worlds since childhood. From building in the sandbox behind his house, to drawing fantastical worlds with paper and pencil, there has hardly been a time he hasn't been off on some adventure in his mind, to the dismay of parents and teachers alike. Also, since the moment he could read, books have consumed vast swaths of his life. From The Mouse and the Motorcycle, to The Lord of the Rings, worlds just beyond reality have called to him like Homer's Sirens. It's not surprising then he chose to write stories of his own. Each filled with worlds just beyond reach, but close enough we can all catch a glimpse of ourselves in the characters he brings to life.

Book Review and Tour: Zoe and Zak and the Yogi's Curse

Yogi's Curse Blog Tour Banner

About the Book

Title: Zoe & Zak and the Yogi's Curse (Zoe & Zak Series, Book #2)
Author: Lars Guignard
Publishers: Fantastic Press
Publication Date: September 9, 2013
Pages: 340
Recommended Age: 8+

Summary

Zoe and Zak are back in India. Again. And this time they're attending Moonstock Himalayan Boarding School, which might seem fun except for the fact that the school itself is a little strange. Students ride elephants instead of school buses, snarling monkeys work as security guards, and angry parrots monitor the halls. And even when they manage to get used to the wildlife, the food is absolutely terrible. But living with a bunch of other kids their age can be a lot of fun, too, or at least it seems that way until Zoe's roommate goes missing. Following the directions written on a steamy bathroom mirror, Zoe and Zak fly through the clouds on their magic carpet to learn that the two of them have been chosen yet again. This time they've been asked to lift the Yogi's Curse. It's not going to be easy. Zoe and Zak don't even know what the Yogi's Curse is let alone how to lift it, but like it or not, they soon discover that a whole lot of people are depending on them. Now, if they're going to save the day, Zoe and Zak are going to have to fool the monkey guards, avoid the nasty parrots, and maybe even develop a supernatural ability or two. Because lurking beneath Moonstock is a powerful new enemy. And if Zoe and Zak can't stop him, nobody can.

My Personal Review

Zoe and Zak and the Yogi's Curse was entertaining and full of adventure! And I highly recommend it as part of your children's book collection!

As a parent, I look for books that not only are fun and entertaining for my kids to read (if they aren't, then it's like pulling teeth out of their mouth to get them to finish it), but also ones that teach them values and morals. This creatively written adventure, fantasy story (which is full of many twists and turns) will make the reader think more deeply (there is quite a mix of problem-solving, which today's kids could value from). The topic of trust came up quite often. That is who should Zoe and Zak trust and who shouldn't they trust. This is a topic I'm always trying to get my kids to think about. And Lars Guignard was able to tackle such an important parenting topic with fun and zest.  In addition, he brought in another theme about how bad luck may possibly be good luck in disguise. I enjoyed following this theme as I read the story because I'm a true believer that even bad things can somehow end up a positive. We live in some tough times. This story left me believing that any thing is possible--even elephants flying which happens in the Yogi's Curse. Kids need hope. They need creativity. They need to believe. Zoe and Zak and the Yogi's Curse does just that.

The only con that I found while reading this story was how detailed it was. I felt as if sometimes Zoe (who narrated the story) gave too much detail in her description of areas and events for her age. Other than that, I think this is a great read for a tween and teen!

The Buzz

"I have a 10 year old son who is an avid reader!! He loves books, (but he's picky too) he loved Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. He was so excited to read the 2nd book in this series! When I presented him the first book he was not sure he would like it but changed his mind quickly, then when I heard about the 2nd book being released he almost jumped out of his chair! (no exaggeration) He is anxiously awaiting the 3rd book! I would say that any child who enjoys fantasy/adventure books should read this series! It is a well written page turner! It's a fun story that adults can even enjoy the storyline without getting bored! According to my son, 'every kid should read this series'. " ~ 5-Star review from SavyGreenSaver, Amazon
"I loved this book, even as an adult reading it. I was completely sucked into the plot and was constantly finding myself staying up "just a little longer" to read one more chapter. Different twists and turns in the book have you constantly guessing who is behind what and who Zak and Zoe can trust. I could definitely see myself being involved in this series as a middle schooler considering how much I enjoyed it even now. Another thing I liked about it is if you missed the first book, you could still follow along with this one and not be lost." ~ 5-Star review from Staci, Amazon
"Lars Guignard has done a fabulous job with this series. I loved the `Ghost Leopard' & love this one even more. For late-elementary to middle school age readers, you can't beat this series. It's fun and fast-paced. Even my picky fifth grader enjoyed every page. There are bits of magic thrown in keep the action exciting. Mr. Guignard has a brilliant imagination & readers are blessed that he's chosen to use it for YA fiction. If you've yet to read the first installment in this series, do yourself a favor and read these books back to back. Don't limit it just to kids! Adults will have a blast reading these too!" ~ 5-Star review from Liz Terek, Amazon
